A Personal Egg

Salutations. How nice that in this MTV era I've kept your attention this long. Thank you for your time!

To reward you for making it all the way to my home page, here are my two favorite palindromes which can be found in the town of Yreka, California:

1.

And not to be outdone, right across the street you'll find:

2.

My name is Morrisa Stanfield Sherman. My parents, who are wonderful and intelligent weirdoes, named me for my paternal grandfather Morris in gender-twisting respect to the Jewish tradition of naming your child after a beloved family member who has died, and for the psychiatrist in whose office they met, Francis Stanfield, who I assume is still alive. I think that explains a lot, really.

I named myself Magpie for email purposes because as names go, it's easier to spell and remember than Morrisa, it's distinctive, and because all us magpies are chatterers and collectors.

I am a hopeless dilettante. In addition to making artly and writerly bits, I can also carve pumpkins to beat the band, bellydance, read tarot cards, memorize lyrics pointlessly and phenomenally well, create faux painted surfaces, and hot damn, can I cook. I have a dollhouse. I've studied enough Spanish, Hebrew, German, Chinese, and Russian to get the attention of waiters the world over and to bargain in any number of marketplaces.

My husband nj and I own an iguana, a ball python, and a Pomeranian.  Ah, motherhood!

I graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1988. That also explains a lot. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in the Practice of Fine Art and one in English Literature, which make me a certified dilettante.

I taught English in China for the year of 1988 to 1989, and came home after the Tian-an-men massacre. To quote Charles Dickens, It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.   I've also trod in such fine countries as Ireland, England, Sweden, the Netherlands, Greece, Fiji, and Hawaii.  Okay, Hawaii isn't a different country.  But it feels like one if you hit the right beach.

My article Burning Man, the Body was selected by Here Lies: The io.Writing Quarterly Issue Number Two, September 23, 1996 for their Fished from the Net feature.

I work on my artwork and writing from my home studio, and most of my artwork is for sale. Here's my resume.

I appreciate all feedback. Let me know how you enjoyed A Magpie's Nest.
